Retaining Walls

Retaining Wall Installation in Ann Arbor

A good retaining wall turns a sloped, washing-out yard into flat, usable space and keeps soil away from your driveway, patio or foundation. Concrete Contractor Ann Arbor designs and builds custom retaining walls for homes, HOAs and commercial properties across Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County.

  • Segmental block walls: interlocking concrete block in many colors and textures.
  • Poured concrete walls: reinforced walls for heavy loads, driveways and grade changes.
  • Natural stone and boulder walls: a rustic look for landscapes and hillsides.
  • Tiered and terraced walls: two or more levels with planting beds between them.
  • Commercial retaining walls: parking lots, building pads, apartments and HOA entrances.
  • Wall repair and replacement: rebuilding leaning, bulging or failed timber and block walls.

How We Build It

How We Build a Retaining Wall That Stays Straight

Most failed walls in Michigan lean or bulge because water gets trapped behind them and freezes. Here is how we prevent that:

  • Site check and layout of the slope, soil, drainage and wall height, with utilities marked first.
  • Excavation and a compacted gravel footing set below grade so the base course stays level.
  • Buried, level base course because a wall is only as straight as its first row.
  • Perforated drain pipe and clean stone backfill so water drains out instead of pushing on the wall.
  • Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls, tying the wall into the soil behind it.
  • Caps, final grading and cleanup, with beds and lawn restored around the new wall.

FAQ

Retaining Wall FAQs

How much does a retaining wall cost in Ann Arbor?

Most segmental block retaining walls run about $30–$55 per square foot of wall face, installed. Poured concrete and natural stone cost more. Height, drainage, access for equipment and whether the wall needs engineering all affect the price. We give you a written quote after a free on-site visit.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Short landscape walls usually do not. Walls taller than about 4 feet, or walls that hold up a driveway, building or other load, typically need an engineered design and a permit. We check the rules for your address and handle the paperwork when it is required.

Why do retaining walls lean or fail?

Almost always water. When water is trapped behind a wall it adds pressure and freezes in winter, pushing the wall out. Drain pipe, clean stone backfill, a solid base and geogrid on taller walls prevent this.

How long does a retaining wall last?

A properly built block, poured concrete or stone wall lasts 50 years or more. Timber walls usually last 10 to 20 years before they rot and need replacing.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

Most residential walls take 2 to 5 days depending on length, height and access. Larger tiered or commercial walls can take one to three weeks.

Can you fix my leaning retaining wall?

Sometimes a short section can be rebuilt, but if the wall leans because it has no drainage or base, the right fix is usually to take it down and rebuild it correctly. We will tell you which makes sense after looking at it.
